Raw Natural Path

For me, all interaction with the plants of the wild is a synergy of interaction between me and Mother Earth. It is within the experience of this relationship that we encounter growth and understanding of our human presence and purpose.

Recently, I had a severe encounter with Poison Ivy (Rhus radicans) that has left me exploring the underlying purpose of this battle with the powerful, formidable, feminine presence of this plant. As a result of this contact, I have determined that it's not necessarily the plant that attracts this exploration. It's my re-action with her and how this experience offered me clues about my life journey both on a physical level and in my unconsciousness.

Before I reveal some of my deeply personal battles that reflected the symbolic poison ivy attack, it is necessary to explain her physical presence on the planet earth. As most people know, Poison ivy emits a poisonous oil irritant called “urushiol” (pronounced ooh-roo-sheeall). In its pure form the amount that could fill a pinhead can make 500 people very miserable. Even a tiny amount (1 nano-gram, a billionth of a gram) of sticky, resin-like urushiol oil will case a skin reaction. One quarter of an ounce of the potent oil would be enough to cause a rash on the entire population of the earth! Yikes!

Planting by the moon is an idea as old as agriculture, based both in folklore and superstition, but there are scientific ideas to back it up The Earth is in a large gravitational field, influenced by both the sun and moon. Ancient man had an affinity of knowledge blending the art of gardening and the moon science.  He made calendars of the year according to the Moon's motion through the sky - though that motion does not harmonize well with the true length of the year - and some are still in use (the Jewish and Muslim calendars, for example).

As do plants throughout the season, the Moon goes through phases, from new to full and back again, every month.  In fact, that's why we call it a "month"; it's a "moonth" - "moon's" - period, get it? Well, I know the women do!

Are these cycles a "cosmic coincidence" or a deliberate design, made with deliberate intent?   Leave that question for a while.  Let’s study the moon’s influence on Mother Earth.

As spring groans into life, dew represents her blessing.  I am delightfully anticipating spring dew collecting as a personal celebration of Spring’s arrival. This article shares my secret little passion with dew.  

Dew is sustenance which arises as if by magic. Overnight, something mysterious occurs and when we wake water gilds the grasses and the fields. (Of course, the scientific processes are well-understood ~ it has to do with temperatures and condensation -- but I prefer to think of dew as a mystery.)  Actually, Dew forms in the night because of temperature differences in the air and the objects it forms on. It's the same principle that causes the outside of your glass to become wet when you add ice to your drink.

For me, Dew represents divine grace: omnipresent, mysterious, blessing everyone equally no matter who we are. If you've never gone outside very early on a spring morning and walked barefoot I invite you to do so this year! Yes, it can be cold on your feet but it is most invigorating. But this isn't just because it's cold. The dew is full of Earth and Cosmic energies and they transfer themselves through your sensitive feet and up through you Chakras. It's a real rush! I can't help it, I always get the Grateful Dead song "Walk me out in the Morning Dew, my honey....." going through my head. Corny but appropriate and becomes my morning tribal song. While you're walking around look at the plants and introduce yourself. “How dew you do? Go ahead and taste some (first checking that the plant isn't toxic or sprayed with chemicals, please!!!).
